TOOTING TOWN CENTRE

TOOTING TOWN CENTRE

Working closely with the London Borough of Wandsworth, the Brick Box, and a range of local stakeholders, UPB developed a town centre strategy for Tooting town centre, as part of the GLA Outer London Fund Round 02 initiative.
The strategy includes four new public spaces and a public realm network that adds depth to the town centre by opening up new routes into Tooting Market, linking disused public spaces and allowing access through the town centre block. The strategy also includes a series of public exchange spaces, marked by new street furniture, lighting, and a special ground surface, with transformable kiosks. Designed to promote inter-cultural exchange, the spaces can be rented by local businesses, market holders, artists, craftsmen and performers, to use as a venue to sell and produce their wares.
Combined with a series of performative arts events, in collaboration with Tooting Arts Club and Tooting Arts Network, the strategy is designed to promote a cross-over of small-scale social, economic and cultural production as a driver of urban renewal.
